The red brick Monroe County Courthouse, built in a traditional county courthouse style, was completed in 1890. Its 100 foot clock tower is an architectural feature that can be observed from almost any part of Key West. In the early days of Key West, auctions for cargoes of wrecked ships were held on the Courthouse steps.
