Mayo replaced New Troy as the county seat of Lafayette County in 1892. The courthouse built in 1909, created a stir among local residents due to its $47,000.00 cost, thought to be exorbitant for a small county at the time. The Lafayette County Courthouse is complemented by a bell tower, with a bell that marks the passing of each hour.
